The Register of economic activities in Georgia: who needs It, how to register, and how to obtain an extract

In recent days, interest in the Register of Economic Activities has surged — many business owners only learned about it after inspections and requests to provide proof of their business activities.

Let’s take a closer look at:

  • what this register is,
  • who needs to register,
  • what the risks are if you don’t register,
  • and how to obtain an extract.

What is the Register of economic activities

The Register of Economic Activities is a government database that records:

  • types of economic activities,
  • changes and terminations of activities,
  • the actual business address.

The Registry is part of the Public Registry of Georgia and is governed by the Law “On the Public Registry” (Chapter IV.3).

It is sometimes also referred to as the business activity registry.

Key principles of the Registry

1. What must be registered

The following are entered into the registry:

  • the types of activities conducted by sole proprietors and companies,
  • changes in activities,
  • cessation of activities,
  • the actual business address.

2. Mandatory registration

Registration:

  • is generally voluntary,
  • but mandatory for certain types of activities if expressly required by law.

Important: If an activity requires registration, operating without it is illegal.

3. Effective date of registration

An activity is considered registered from the moment the registering authority makes its decision.

4. Validity period

  • Registration is valid for 1 year.
  • Renewal is required.

If not renewed, the registration is automatically canceled.

5. Penalties

For conducting business without registration: 500 lari (including cases where registration has simply not been renewed).

What you need to register

To enter data into the Foreign Economic Activity Register, you will need:

1. Business registration

  • An individual entrepreneur or company in Georgia;
  • (or simply an identification number).

2. Economic activity codes

  • Selected from the classification list;
  • you may specify several.

Recommendation: the codes must match:

  • your tax office,
  • your small business certificate (if applicable)

3. Business address

  • the cadastral code of the property,
  • where the business is actually conducted.

A common mistake is to specify the legal address instead of the actual address.

How to register

There are 3 ways to apply:

  • In person. At any House of Justice.
  • Through a representative. With a notarized power of attorney.
  • Online. Through the portal https://my.gov.ge/.

  • A residence permit is required,
  • as well as a card reader and a PIN code.

  2. Online. https://www.my.gov.ge/ka-ge/services/6/service/180

Important

  • The extract is provided free of charge.
  • Any interested party may request it.

Practical risks (what to watch out for)

In practice, the Foreign Economic Activity Register is most often required by:

  • banks,
  • government agencies,
  • when applying for a residence permit,
  • when confirming self‐employed status.

Failure to register may:

  • raise questions from government agencies,
  • lead to fines,
  • complicate interactions with banks.

Conclusion

The Register of Economic Activities is not a mere formality, but an important tool for legalizing a business in Georgia.

Even if registration is not formally required, in many situations it is effectively necessary.
