Foreigners working in Georgia in 2026: statistics, residence permits, and work permits

According to the latest official data, there are more than 51,000 migrant workers registered in Georgia. This was reported by the country’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.

In second place in terms of numbers are Indian citizens, who make up about 13 % of the total number of foreign workers. At the same time, there is a clear professional specialization:

  • citizens of the CIS and Eastern Europe are mainly employed in the IT sector;
  • citizens of India are more likely to work in construction and participate in infrastructure projects;
  • foreigners from Ukraine, of whom there are almost 3,000 registered, work in both IT and the service sector.

It is also reported that more than 107,000 foreign citizens have already obtained residence permits in Georgia.

Overall, according to government estimates, there are about 257,000 people living in the country who were born outside Georgia. At the same time, approximately 20,000 foreigners may be in the country without legal status.

Why is this important in 2026?

Remember that new rules for foreign nationals working in Georgia will come into force on March 1, 2026. From then on, in order to work or conduct business legally, you will need:

  • a work permit,
  • a valid reason for staying in the country — a D1 visa or residence permit.

Working under a visa-free regime without legal status will be a violation of migration law and may result in fines of up to 4,000 GEL.
