Georgia has officially launched the issuance of new‐generation electronic identity cards with an updated design. The documents are being issued by the Agency for the Development of Public Services of the Georgian Ministry of Justice.
The decision to launch the new ID cards was not made immediately and was postponed several times, but the updated documents are now available for issuance.
Enhanced security and national design
The agency emphasizes that the new ID cards have enhanced security features. The document is equipped with modern security elements and fully complies with current international standards in the field of identity verification.
Not only the technical aspects have been updated, but also the visual aspects — the ID card design features national symbols and thematic elements that reflect Georgia’s cultural identity.
Replacement of ID cards is not mandatory
It is important to note that:
- the cost of issuing a new ID card remains unchanged;
- citizens whose current ID cards have not yet expired are not required to replace them with the new model.
Replacement is voluntary, at the discretion of the cardholder.
What information does the updated ID card contain?
The new electronic ID card includes:
- the owner’s fingerprint;
- a QR code that can be scanned to obtain additional information.
The QR code provides access to the following information:
- the document number and current status;
- the holder’s registered address;
- upon request, the holder’s status as a student or person with disabilities.
Where and how to submit an application
You can apply for a new ID card:
